A man has drowned in Lake Hartwell.

According to DNR Law Enforcement officer, Craig Fulghum tells WNEG News a Hispanic male drowned while swimming at the Big Oaks Recreation area Sunday afternoon.

He said it happened about 6 p.m.

His body has been turned over to the Hart County Coroner.

The victim’s name has not been released pending notification of family.

Fulghum said they are seeing more inexperienced boaters and PWC operators on the lake this year than in years past.

Fulghum said this has been the busiest on Lake Hartwell he’s ever seen.

As of Sunday evening, he said DNR officers and rangers had given out about 100 citations to boaters and PWC operators on Lake Hartwell – primarily for safety violations.
