Lt. John Addis retires after 39 years at the Toccoa Police Department

Lt. John Addis retires from the Toccoa Police Department after 39 years.

The Toccoa Police Department said farewell to one of its most tenure employees on Friday.

Lt. John Addis decided to hang up his hat after 39 years of service with the City of Toccoa.

Addis says over the years he made many memories.

“There are so many memories, that I can’t really name one in particular. We had, back in the older days, we all worked together, and we took care of each other, and that’s what I tried to instill in these guys now,” he said. “I became an instructor just to make sure these guys, I guess that’s been the most rewarding things, to teach them how to survive and how to work with people.”

Addis tells WNEG News he plans to sleep in during his first day of retirement.

Toccoa Police Chief Jimmy Mize says Addis will definitely be missed.

“John was always one of those guys that no matter where you worked, he was always willing to help,” Mize said. “When I first started, at the Sheriff’s Office, he would come, and we would do our Sheriff qualifications with our firearms and he taught several of our classes. Since I’ve been here at the Police Department, he’s always been helpful. When I transitioned into the Chief Position, he was a big help in getting me in the ropes and making sure I had everything. John is going to be missed, but he’s going to enjoy being retired.”

Addis’ last day was on Friday, January 31, 2020.
