Just a reminder, if you need to get your pet vaccinated against rabies, you can do so this weekend for $5 in Franklin County.

The annual rabies clinic takes place Saturday, April 27th at various locations and times around Franklin County.
Franklin County Environmental Health Director Louis Korff says the rabies clinic is not just for residents of Franklin County.

“They can live in New Jersey and come to our rabies clinics. Everyone in any county is welcome to come and that’s why I reach out to our friends at WNEG because we are vets without boundaries. Sometimes timing may not work out for people in Stephens County to go to another rabies clinic in another county. That’s why we try not to overlap with other counteis. We’re not competitive or restrictive, we’re inclusive. We just want as many people as possible to get their pets vaccinated for rabies,” Korff said.

Veterrinarians in Franklin County will be administering the low-cost rabies shots for just $5 per pet.

“We are able to keep our vaccinations at $5. We are the only county that keeps it at $5. Some of the other counties has raised their rabies clinics to as much as $11,” he explained. “We’re holding firm. Sometimes, that’s allpeople can afford and if it gets a pet owner out there to vaccinate their pets it’s worth it.”

Rabies, once contracted is always fatal in humans unless you get a series of post-exposure shots (PEP’s) as soon as possible, but those shots are painful and very expensive.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, a course of rabies immune globulin and four doses of vaccine given over a two-week period typically exceeds $3,000, and insurance doesn’t usually cover it.

Korff notes that for $5 per pet, you can have peace of mind knowing your animal is protected from rabies should it come in contact with an infected wild animal or feral cat.
