Local Veterans Showcase Features Korean War Veterans This Month

We’ve been telling you about the return tomorrow of the remains of Army Cpl. Terrell J. Fuller.

Now the Currahee Military Museum has dedicated the entire month of August to honor and remember those local veterans who served in the Korean War.

Museum Director Brenda Carlin says the Local Veterans Showcase is an ongoing exhibit designed to honor veterans from Toccoa-Stephens County.

“What we do is we have asked for active or previous military to provide their military history and we have an archive where we keep it,” Carlin said. “Lyn Hack has worked on this and she does a beautiful job. This is information that Lyn has researched or has been provided to us by these men. All of this is in honor of Terrell Fuller’s coming home, Lyn has chosen to have a special exhibit for Korean veterans.”

Dozens of Korean veterans are listed in the display this month, each with their own citation listing their service.

Carlin says every month there‘s a new display honoring a branch of the military or some other aspect of military service.

“It has a different theme every month,” she explained. “One time we had all families. Another time we had Rotary members. In November we have Marines. In May we have the Junior ROTC. There’s usually a connection with the men or women who are on display.”

This month’s display not only honors those veterans who served during the Korean War, but any local veteran who has served or is currently serving in Korea.

And Carlin says the museum always welcomes more information and items from all local veterans for future displays.

“We’re really proud of it,” she said. “I think Lyn said the other day she’s got like 700 files on file and we’re always looking for more. If anyone wants to submit their information on their military history, we’d love to have it.”

The Currahee Military Museum is located in the back of the Toccoa Train Depot and Welcome Center on Alexander St.

The museum is open Monday – Saturday from 10a to 4p and on Sundays from 1p to 4p.
