Local Day of Prayer Service to Take Place Today At Veterans Park

Today is the National Day of Prayer and this year, unlike in years past, the local observance will be held at Veterans Park on Doyle Street in downtown Toccoa, across the street from Regions Bank.

This is the 73rd National Day of Prayer, and This year’s theme is LIFT UP THE WORD/LIGHT UP THE WORLD, based on Scripture from Samuel 22: 29-31.

At many of the services on the National Day of Prayer, seven specific areas are prayed for, including the country’s government and leadership, education, the media, the economy, churches, the family unit, and the military.

Stephens County’s local observance will be held today at Veterans Park at 12 noon; however, people normally begin gathering at approximately 11:30 a.m. The non-denominational Christian event will last approximately 30 minutes.

The National Day of Prayer was created 69 years ago in 1952, by a joint resolution of Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman.

In 1988, the law was unanimously amended by both the House and the Senate and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on Thursday, May 5,  designating the first Thursday of May as a day of national prayer.

Every president since 1952 has signed a National Day of Prayer proclamation.

And if you are unable to attend the live service today, WNEG Radio will air the local event live, beginning at noon. There will be no WNEG noon report today.

P230 Foundation – a local evangelical ministry – is sponsoring the event, with P230’s Steve Paysen taking on the organizational role.
