Local church offers warm place to stay

Frigid temperatures are expected to stick with us through Friday and one local church plans to open its doors to anyone that needs a warm place to stay.

St. Matthias Episcopal Church in Toccoa was open Tuesday night and plans to open again tonight.

Temperatures tonight and tomorrow night are expected to dip down into the teens and church member Robin Dake says the church’s fellowship hall will be available as a warming station.

Dake said the decision on whether to open the fellowship hall for the night is typically made that day and depends on the number of volunteers they have available.

However, she said she already has enough people ready to help tonight.

Dake says the church will be open to anyone who needs a warm place to stay for the night.

St. Matthias’ fellowship hall will be open tonight from 7p to 7a.

Meantime, the Toccoa Salvation Army is also helping those who need it find a warm place to stay for the night.

Brenda Gragg is the social worker for the Salvation Army.

Gragg says they help in a number of different ways.
