Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter to Hold Spring Low-Cost Rabies/Vaccine Clinic

Earlier this week State health officials warned of the importance having your pet vaccinated against rabies.

With the weather now getting warmer, the chances of your pet encountering a wild animal infected with the disease increases.

That’s why the Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter in Lavonia is again offering a spring rabies clinic at their shelter on Bear Creek Road.

This year’s rabies clinic will be held Saturday April 14 from 10a to 3p.

You do not have to be a resident of Franklin County to get your pet vaccinated.

Rabies vaccines will be $5 for a one-year vaccine, $10 for a three-year vaccine. In addition to the dog and cat rabies vaccines, horse owners can also bring their horses to be vaccinated for $15.

Other annual dog and cat vaccines will also be offered at a discount. Both the distemper/parvo vaccine and the kennel cough vaccine will be $7. They will also be offering the FVRCP cat vaccines for $7.

Stephens County Environmental Health Director Shad Slocum said the County had 10 cases of rabies in wild animals last year, mainly in skunks, but no reports of pets being infected.

Still, Slocum says it is important to make sure your pets and livestock are protected and it’s the law.

“It is very important to have your pets vaccinated,” Slocum said. “It is the law in Georiga. Having pets vaccinated can save possibly having to euthanize and test the animal or quarantine the animal for up to six months. However, if they are vaccinated all we need to do is booster the animal and quarantine them for 45 days.”

In Stephens County, rabies clinics are typically held in May by local veterinarians.  When those dates are announced we will bring them to you.

Again, the Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter Rabies Clinic will be held Saturday April 14 from 10a to 3p at their shelter on Bear Creek Road in Lavonia.
