LES Creating a culture of student success, with help from parents

Liberty Elementary starts every school day with their very own news broadcast, hosted by none other than the school principal.

Dr. Connie Yearwood, who has been at the helm of Liberty Elementary since last April, is a strong supporter of communication, and said she feels it is important to not only pass on daily information and schedules, but let students know when they are excelling, and when they are falling short of expectations.

WNEG News stopped by the school last week to talk with Yearwood about the upcoming school year, and had the opportunity to hear Yearwood’s morning broadcast, where she praised the students chosen as the day’s Promise Keepers, gave firm reminders about expected bus behavior, and encourage a new approach to hallway etiquette.

According to Yearwood, parents are a key part of the success – both academic and behavioral – that Liberty Elementary asks of its students. That parent involvement is a main focus for the school this year, she said.

She said that a strong base for parental involvement is for parents to be passionate about attendance, and to work with their children on school lessons, especially reading and math.

Yearwood stressed how important it is to create a positive culture in the school.

Liberty Elementary is planning parent involvement night on September 19 focusing on literacy, and will hold the first school governance team meeting of the year on August 23.

She explained that the school governance team is part of the school’s charter agreement with the state.

There will also be a parent volunteer training upcoming.

Yearwood said she is proud of the faculty, staff and students at the school, and the culture they are creating at Liberty Elementary.
