Learn To Be Safe in and Around Water

Habersham County Parks and Recreation is inviting everyone to come out for the department’s Spring 2024 Swim Safely Day on April 20.

Swim Safely Day will provide a curriculum backed by the American Red Cross by partnering with Piedmont University’s Swim Team Program and Katy Ralston, natatorium director for Tallulah Falls School who, along with some of her staff, will be assisting with the water safety training section of the day.

The free event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Habersham County Ruby Fulbright Aquatic Center, 120 Paul Franklin Road, Clarkesville, and will feature interactive workshops, demonstrations, and activities. The last session will begin at 1 p.m.

Habersham County Parks and Recreation Director Brooke Whitmire said that this initiative is aimed at promoting water safety awareness and empowering families in the community with life-saving skills.

Instructional sessions begin every hour on the hour at 10, 11, noon, and 1 and will last about 90 minutes. Those who complete one of the sessions will receive a free lifejacket.

Whitmire said that access to safety items upon completion of the program is crucial in reinforcing the water safety education received during the event, adding that the safety items will serve as practical resources that participants can utilize to ensure their continued safety in and around water. She stressed that the event is designed for everyone, from those who cannot swim to those who swim daily. The event is open to residents in Habersham and surrounding counties, including Stephens County.

Those attending should bring a swimsuit and towel. Children must be at least 4 to participate in the water and those ages 4-6 are required to have a parent/adult in the water with them.

Advance registration is encouraged as there is limited space in each session. Register at habershamrecreation.com. Click Programs & Filter for Community Program.
