Law Enforcement warns public not to stop for flashing headlights

Recent reports of people pulling over for an un-official vehicle prompts law enforcements attention.

According to officials, an un-official vehicle posing to be an officer has been conducting traffic stops in the area.

The scam was initially reported in Habersham County and prompted Habersham County’s Sheriff Joey Terrell to post to social media a warning of the scam.

The post alerted the public, instructing everyone to take extra caution and notice of an “unknown male subject driving a black Dodge Charger attempting to pull people over by flashing the car’s headlights.”

Terrell told WNEG News that all of his deputies have vehicles with blue lights, even if the cars are not marked.

“The driver is a white male in his mid to late 50s with salt and pepper hair and a gray or white goatee,” Terrell said.

According to officials, if someone tries to get you to pull over by flashing their lights, don’t. It is advised that you turn your emergency flashers on and call 911.

“Even if the car has blue lights, you are free to call 911 and ask if the vehicle behind you is indeed an officer,” Terrell said. “Remember, you can use your phone to make an emergency call while driving.”

Locally, the Toccoa Police Department is encouraging the public to report suspicious activity.

If you see something similar to the aforementioned report, then say something by calling the Toccoa Police Department at 706-282-3302.

When calling you will need to describe specifically what you observed, such as: who or what you saw; when you saw it; where it occurred; and a description of persons or vehicles.

According to Toccoa Police Chief Jimmy Mize “whether you are on your way to work or walking in your neighborhood, we all play a role in keeping the community safe.”

Again “If you see something say something” by calling 706-282-3302.

Mize also advises that if it is an emergency call 911.
