Lavonia man arrested after traffic stop uncovers 1-1/2 pounds of Marijuana

A Lavonia man has been arrested following a traffic stop that led Stephens County Sheriff’s Deputies to uncover more than a pound of marijuana from his vehicle.

According to Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley, on Friday, May 22, Stephens County Investigators and deputies were conducting a targeted patrol in the area of Hwy 17 coming from Franklin County.

Shirley says investigators were receiving information regarding drug traffickers using this roadway to bring illegal drugs into the county from I-85.

During this target patrol, Investigators observed a grey Nissan Altima, driven by 29-year-old Lavonia resident James Merritt Byrd and conducted a traffic stop after observing a moving violation.

Immediately upon approaching the vehicle, investigators smelled an odor of marijuana coming from inside.

Based on this odor, investigators conducted a search of the vehicle; during which, investigators located approximately 1-1/2 pounds of marijuana in a drink box lying in the floorboard of the vehicle.

Shirley says Investigators also located scales, packaging material, and over $1,500 in small bills.

Byrd was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute along with possession and use of drug related objects.

He was transported to the Stephens County Jail where he is awaiting a bond hearing.

Shirley adds that this investigation is ongoing, and more charges may be pending.
