Lavonia Chamber Hosting Book Drive

By MJ Kneiser, WLHR

The Lavonia Chamber of Commerce is developing a plan to provide storybooks for Lavonia Elementary School’s kindergarten students and their younger siblings and they need your help.

Chamber volunteer Susan Poole tells WNEG’s sister station WLHR the project is called, Lapsitting Learners.

“We are asking for donations of books appropriate for children from infancy to age five. We know many parents have books their own children have outgrown and this is a good opportunity to repurpose those books,” Poole said. “Also, new books can be purchased inexpensively from dollar stores and thrift stores.”

Working with Lavonia Elementary Assistant Principal Laura Baskins the Chamber hopes to collect books and distribute them during kindergarten class story times.

According to Poole, the children will receive a book for themselves and a book to take home to share with their younger brothers and sisters.

The Lapsitting Learners Project is also designed to encourage parents and older siblings to nurture a love of books in the family’s youngest children.

Poole noted many families in the school’s district to not have disposable income to purchase children’s books.

The Lavonia Chamber is asking parents and others to donate story books appropriate for ages infancy to five years old.

Poole said they hope to have their first distribution of books next month.

She said the goal is to have enough books before the Fall break so the children will have books to take home.

Two more distributions are planned later in the school year – one in December and another before the school year ends.

You can drop off your donated story books the Lavonia Depot or the Lavonia Chamber of Commerce.
