Last Day to Register to Vote for May General Primary

If you plan to vote in the May General Primary but have not registered to vote, today is the last day to do that.

Stephens County Registrar Bill Cochran says there are now only a couple of ways to register in order to vote in the May elections.

“There’s a couple ways for any citizen to register,” Cochran said. “They can go online to the Secretary of State’s My Voter page for Georgia, or they can come by my office today from 8a to 5p to register in person. We will need a photo ID and proof of residence in the County. That’s about the only way you can do it now because time is so short.”

Meantime, early voting begins next Monday, April 30th and runs through Friday, May 18th.

Cochran says if you have not voted in a long time you should contact his office to make sure you are still on the voter rolls.

“If anyone has not voted in two general elections, which is an eight-year period they can call the Registrar’s office and we can look up their name and give them their status as a voter,” he explained.

In Stephens County, voters will be casting ballots for two seats on the Stephens County Board of Commissioners, and one seat on the Stephens County Board of Education.

Voters will also be choosing their District 28 State Representative.

Incumbent Republican Dan Gasaway is being challenged by Republican candidate Chris Erwin in that race.

Cochran says if you want to vote early but cannot do so in person, absentee ballots are still going out.

“Absentee ballots will go out until the Friday before the May election,” he said. “So, there’s still an opportunity to call and ask for an application. We’ll send it out the same day. When we get the application back we will send out the absentee ballot. So, there’s still plenty of time for that.”
