Lady Indians Win Thriller

Marie McNeal scored all 5 of her points in the final minute, including the decisive field goal with 2 seconds remaining, to lead the Stephens County Lady Indians to an exciting 58-56 victory over St. Pius in Atlanta on Tuesday night.

McNeal knocked down a 3-pointer late in the game to give the Lady Indians the lead, and the Lady Indians led by 2 after NaNa Eades made one of two from the free throw line with 20 seconds remaining. Kate McBride of St. Pius scored 2 of her 14 points with 9 seconds left to tie the score. After a timeout, Eades took the inbounds pass and raced up the floor to find McNeal for the winning score.

Renajah Verdell and KiKi Howard scored 16 points each to lead the Lady Indians. St. Pius was led by Wylie Sheridan’s 21 points.

Stephens County improves to 5-1 in Region-8 play and 17-5 overall. St. Pius falls to 15-5 overall and 2-3 in the Region. The Lady Indians win, coupled with Madison County’s victory over Oconee County, presents a chance to clinch the Region-8 regular season and top seed in the region tournament with a home victory over Oconee County or North Oconee next week.

In the boys contest, St. Pius led by 16 points at the half and rolled to a 75-46 win over Stephens County.

Kenny Colwell was the lone Indian in double figures with 18 points. Daniel Beverly led three Golden Lions in double figures with 17.

Stephens County falls to 7-15 overall and 1-5 in Region-8 play. St. Pius remains in first place in Region 8 with a record of 4-1, and 15-6 overall.
