Lady Indians Roll and Claim First Region Win

The Stephens County Lady Indians scored the first twelve points of the game and rolled to a 56-10 win over Monroe Area Friday night at Currahee Arena.

The Lady Indians led 25-4 at the half and outscored the Purple Hurricanes 27-2 in the 3rd quarter to pick up their first region win of the season.

A’Niya Mayweather led a balanced Stephens County scoring attack with 14 points and Carson Stowe also placed in double figures with 13 points. The Lady Indians improved to 1-3 in region-8 play and 3-15 overall.

Khi Rather scored 4 points for Monroe Area now 0-4 in the region and 3-14 overall.

In the boys contest, Trip Griffith scored 15, of his game high 27 points, in the deciding 3rd quarter to lead Monroe Area to a 75-64 win over Stephens County.

Jet Black’s 3-pointer at the buzzer gave the Indians a 2-point lead at halftime but Griffith and Vonte Newell led the Purple Hurricanes to a 24-16 advantage in the 3rd quarter and Monroe Area led the rest of the way.

Newell added 16 points, KD Dawson 14, and Jaiven Todd 10 for Monroe Area now 1-3 in the region and 13-5 overall.

Black led the Indians in scoring with 25 points, Nuri Winters had 13 points and Javin Gordon 12 for Stephens County now 1-3 in the region and 7-10 overall.

The Indians and Lady Indians will be back on the road on Tuesday at Hebron Christian Academy. The Lions currently sit in first place in the region standings in both boys and girls. Airtime Tuesday will be 5:45 P.M. on WNEG.
