Lady Indians defeat Hurricanes, Head Into Regionals at #5 Seed

The Stephens County Lady Indians basketball team defeated Monroe Area Tuesday night on the road, 58-32.  With the win, Stephens County has clinched a number 5 seed in the upcoming Region Tournament and will face the number 4 seed, Franklin County, in the first round.  After leading by 14 points at halftime, the Lady Indians held Monroe Area to only 4 points in the third quarter and went on to the easy victory.  Stephens County was led by A’niya Mayweather with 18 points and Aleria Faulkner with 15.  Stephens County’s record improved to 4 & 19 overall, and 2 & 7 in region play.

The Stephens County boys trailed by only 3 points early in the fourth quarter, but could not keep up with Monroe Area down the stretch and lost 73-62.  Javin Gordon led the Indians with 15 points, followed by Jet Black with 11 and Aidan Butts with 10.  Stephens County drops to 9 & 13 overall and 3 & 6 in the region. 

The Indians and Lady Indians will wrap up their regular season schedule this Friday night at the Currahee Arena as they host Hebron Christian.  The varsity girls will tip off at 6 p.m. with airtime on WNEG at 5:45.    

On the tennis court, the SCHS Indians and Lady Indians tennis teams defeated Elbert County yesterday, Feb. 6. The Indians won by a match score of 4-1, winning 2 singles matches and sweeping both doubles contests. 

Rusty Spencer won at #1 singles; Jaron Jones won at #2 singles; Gavin Wilkinson & Clayton Jones won at #1 doubles; and Elijah Geoghagan & Kerry Wood won a thrilling 3 set come-from-behind match at #2 doubles. 

The Lady Indians won by a match score of 3-2. Nyleigh Hutto won at #1 singles; Laura Sanders & Arwen Bratten won at #2 doubles; and Kara Jones & Ellen Aakerman Brodvall clinched the match with their win at #1 doubles.

The Indians have an overall record of 3-1. The Lady Indians are undefeated at 4-0. Next match for the tennis teams is Monday, Feb. 12 at home against White County.
