Labor Day traffic fatalities quadrupled from last year

Recent reports show that traffic fatalities during the 2018 Labor Day Travel Period has more than quadrupled from last year.

According to officials, with the Georgia State Patrol, during the 78-hour travel period there were 18 fatalities on Georgia roads, a substantial increase from the year prior where only four fatalities were reported.

Georgia Department of Public Safety Commissioner Colonel Mark W. McDonough told WNEG News that during the added patrol, troopers kept an eye for speeders, drivers who text, and those posing a dangerous risk to other motorists on the road.

As part of an initiative to make sure drivers take precaution, local GSP posts have increased the number of troopers patrolling during the holiday so that drivers will see and know that the troopers are watching.

WNEG News will provide additional coverage once the GSP provides a complete break-down of the holiday travel period statistics.
