July 4th holiday travel period ends with 5 fatalities

The 2018 Independence Day travel period claimed 5 lives this year.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, the 30-hour holiday period began on Tuesday, July 3, at 6:00 p.m. and ended Wednesday at 11:59 p.m.

Statewide, GSP troopers investigated 131 traffic crashes that resulted in 59 injuries.

Troopers also investigated two fatal crashes.

The fatal crashes occurred in Brooks and Brantley counties.

Local agencies reporting traffic deaths during the holiday period were: Chamblee Police Department, Cobb County Sheriff’s Office, and Fulton Co. Sheriff’s Office.

In addition to crash investigations, state troopers arrested 118 people for driving under the influence.

In Troop B, which covers Stephens and surrounding counties, there were 0 fatalities reported.
