IRS announces opening date for Tax Season

The Internal Revenue Service announced earlier this week that tax season will open on Monday, January 27 and will provide refunds to taxpayers as scheduled.

In a press release issued Monday, IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said his department is committed to ensuring taxpayers experience another smooth filing season.

The IRS expects to process more than 150 million individual tax returns, with most of the returns filed before the April due date.

Every year, taxpayers have questions about early filing; however, the IRS noted that despite many software companies and tax professionals who accept tax returns before opening day, this doesn’t mean that your tax return will be filed early, those software companies and tax professionals will submit returns when the IRS systems open.

The IRS does advise that once the system opens on the 27th of January, the fastest way to receive a refund is to file your tax returns electronically.

According to Rettig, the fastest and most accurate way to get your refund is to file electronically and chose direct deposit.

Filing electronically flags common errors and prompts taxpayers for missing information.

Taxpayers can get free help preparing and filing taxes through the IRS website’s Free File tool which can be found at irs.gov/filing.

Additionally, IRS tax help is available 24 hours a day on IRS.gov, where people can find answers to tax questions and resolve tax issues online.

The due date for 2019 federal income tax returns is April 15, 2020, for most individual taxpayers.
