Indians to face Elberton in final pre-season scrimmage
The Stephens County Indians will travel to Elbert County for a pre-season football scrimmage game tonight. It will start at 7:30 at the Granite Bowl in Elberton, and admission will be $8.
This will be the final game-type scrimmage before the Indians open the season in two weeks on Friday, August 18th, on the road at Habersham Central.
The format tonight will be similar to a real game, but no live kickoffs or punts.
Elbert County is a long-time football rival, and Indians Head Coach Wesley Tankersley says since they could not get them on the regular season schedule, Stephens County can at least compete against them in tonight’s scrimmage game:
“It’s always a great atmosphere. It used to be a great rivalry, but just have not been able to hook up on the schedule the last few years for a regular season game. It will be exciting to go down there for a scrimmage and get some good work in verses those guys. They are going to be well-coached and they’re going to be fast and physical, so it will be a good day for us to get better,” he said.
93.1 FM & AM-630 WNEG will broadcast tonight’s pre-season scrimmage game with airtime at 7:15 p.m.
In other sports news, the Stephens county high school varsity fastpitch softball team plays a double header at home tonight, August 4, against Elbert County. The first pitch will be at 4:30 p.m., with the second game starting at 6 p.m. The team will play another doubleheader, this time on the road against White County, tomorrow night, August 5, with games starting at 10 a.m. and noon. The JV fastpitch softball team takes on Elbert County at home tonight starting at 4 p.m.
Also, Red Rage is just around the corner. The Fall Season kickoff recognizing students participating in softball, football, volleyball, cross country, band, JROTC, Auxiliary and cheerleading, will take place at the Reservation at 6 p.m. next Thursday, August 10.
