Indians Tame Lions in Football Opener

The Stephens County Indians come from behind to pick up a win in the debut of new head football coach Wesley Tankersley.

Down 3-0 at the half, the Indians scored two third-quarter touchdowns to defeat Franklin County, 13-3, Friday night in Carnesville in the season opener for both teams.

“They came out in that second half and, even though they had some mistakes, they kept fighting,” said Tankersley. “Defensively, I can’t say enough about those guys and how well they played tonight.”

The teams traded turnovers and stops for much of the first half. However, on the final play of the first half, Alex Martinez made a 20-yard field goal to the Lions the lead at intermission.

In the third quarter, the Indian defense got a fourth down stop that led gave them the ball and Stephens County converted it into points as quarterback Kenny Colwell scored on a six-yard touchdown run to give the Indians a 7-3 lead.

Then, after he intercepted a Lion pass, Hudson Spurlock scored on offense on a 13-yard touchdown run to give the Indians a 13-3 lead late in the third quarter that the defense made hold up.

Spurlock led the Indian offense with more than 100 yards rushing.

The win moves the Indians to 1-0 on the season, while Franklin County falls to 0-1. Stephens County heads back out on the road Friday night to take on Hart County, while Franklin County will host Banks County.
