Indians Take Region Title in Dramatic Fashion

Tripp Underwood connected with Da’Von Swinton on a 34-yard touchdown pass with 1:29 to go in the game to lead the Stephens County Indians to a 17-14 come from behind win over Oconee County Friday night at the Reservation.

The win moves the Indians to 9-0 on the season and 4-0 in region play to claim the 2nd straight region-8 AAA title.

Underwood and the offense were stymied much of the night but was magnificent on the touchdown drive moving 80 yards on just 5 plays in just one minute and nine seconds.

The Warriors moved the ball into Indian territory with less than a minute to go but Jasec Smith knocked down a pass on 4th down to secure the win.

Stephens County Head Coach Wesley Tankersley said his team didn’t get down and kept fighting.

It was a tight first half with the Indians jumping out to an early 10-0 lead. Smith got behind the Warrior defense to complete a long pass play from Underwood to set up a 39-yard field goal by Luke Waters on the Indians first possession. After an Oconee punt miscue, the Indians took advantage of great field position culminating with an Aidan Butts 2-yard touchdown run.

Oconee County cut the lead to 3 in the 2nd quarter on a Mac Ricks 5 -yard run and took the lead in the 3rd quarter on a 14-yard touchdown run by Caiden Wood.

Stephens County will try to complete an undefeated regular season when they travel to Hebron Christian next Friday night.
