Indians Swept at Oconee County

The Stephens County Indians basketball teams travelled to Watkinsville Friday night with both the girls’ and boys’ teams falling to Oconee County.

In the girls’ game, Oconee County led throughout outscoring the Lady Indians in every quarter but the 3rd and winning by 18 points 55-37.

Julie Azeltine led the Lady Warriors with 16 points and Eliza Oechsle added 11 points for Oconee County now 1-1 in region-8 AAA play and 8-8 overall.

The Lady Indians, now 0-2 in region play and 2-14 overall, had two players in double figures with A’Niya Mayweather with 14 points and Carson Stowe adding 11.

Things did not go better for the guys. Stephens County, riding a three-game winning streak, led early 14-8 but Oconee County grabbed a one-point lead at the end of the 1st quarter, increased the lead to 11 at the half, and rolled to a 58-48 victory.

It was just the third win of the season for the Warriors, led by freshman Mason Hall with 23 points and senior Levi Slaten with 12.

Stephens County’s Nuri Winters had an outstanding scoring game leading all scorers with 27 points and Javin Gordon added 11 points for the Indians.

The Indians are now 1-1 in region play and 8-9 overall.

Oconee County is also 1-1 in the region and now 3-13 overall.

Stephens County will return home on Tuesday night when they host Hart County at Currahee Arena. Scheduled tipoff time for the girls’ game is 6 P.M. with airtime set for 5:45 P.M. on WNEG.
