Indians Swept at Oconee County

The Oconee County Warriors scored late-inning runs in back to back games and swept the Stephens County Indians in a doubleheader Thursday night in Watkinsville.

In game one, Zeke Newberry drove in Isaac Smith with the winning run in the bottom of the 7th inning for a 7-6 victory.

Stephens County trailed 3-1 going to the top of the 5th inning but scored four runs to take a 5-3 lead. The Warriors battled back to tie the score at 5-5  after five innings. The Indians grabbed the lead right back in the top of the 6th, when after two were out, they strung together three straight hits by Nate Ivester, Craig Thurmond, and Colby Fowler. The Indians carried the one run lead to the bottom of the 7th before Oconee County’s Bryson Dempsey tied the game on a sacrifice fly followed by Newberry’s game winner.

Newberry and Smith had 3 hits each and totaled 5 RBI’s to lead the Warriors offense. Colby Fowler had 2 hits and 2 RBI’s to lead the Indians, and Konnor Loudermilk, William Roush, and Christian Hewitt added RBI’s.

Findley Ward pitched six solid innings but took the loss. Adam Lafontaine, the 4th pitcher for Oconee County, got the win.

In game two, Oconee County broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the bottom of the 6th inning and completed the sweep winning 4-2. Cole Johnson scored three runs and Isaac Smith added two RBI’s to lead the Warriors.

Loudermilk and Ivester each had an RBI with runs scored by Fowler and Hewitt for Stephens County. Hayden Scott got a no-decision allowing only two runs in five innings of work on the mound. Noah Strickland and Noah Holbrooks pitched in relief with Strickland taking the loss. Nate Roberson went the distance for Oconee County to get the win.

Oconee County improves to 6-3 in region-8 play and 9-7 overall. Stephens County has now dropped six straight games, and falls to 2-7 in the region and 7-12 overall.

Stephens County returns to region play on Tuesday when they travel to Hart County with first pitch scheduled for 5:55 P.M. and airtime at 5:45 P.M. on WNEG.
