Indians Swept at Oconee Co.

The Stephens County High School basketball teams will wrap up the regular season Friday after suffering tough losses Tuesday night at Oconee County.

In the boys’ game, Stephens County trailed nearly the whole game only to force overtime before losing to the Warriors 63-61.

Down 15-2 early and trailing by as many as 16 in the second half, the Indians tied it at 59 in the final second on a Nigel Green lay-up. However, Oconee’s John Sims scored four points in overtime and Ty Nails could not get up a shot in the final seconds of overtime as the Warriors held on for the win.

Kenny Colwell led the Indians with 26 points, including six three-pointers. Nigel Green added 17 points and Ty Nails scored 13.

Carter Huckaby led three Warriors in double figures with 17 points, while John Sims scored 12 points and DaShawn Eleter scored 11.

The Indian boys fall to 14-9 with the loss and 4-3 in the region, while the win moves the Warriors to 14-11 overall and 2-6 in the region.

In the girls’ game, Stephens County fought back from a 10-point deficit to cut it to three halfway through the fourth, but the Lady Warriors pulled away for a 38-32 win.

NaNa Eades led the Lady Indians with nine points and Renajah Verdell added eight points. Sybille Foucart led the Lady Warriors with 14 points.

The loss drops the Lady Indians to 5-17 overall and 1-6 in the region. Oconee moves to 14-11 overall and 2-6 in the region with the win. The two teams are guaranteed to play each other again Tuesday in the region tournament play-in game.
