Indians Sweep Warriors in Basketball

Stephens County sweeps a region basketball doubleheader with Oconee County.

A three-pointer by Kenny Colwell in the final minute put the Indian boys ahead and a defensive stand gave them a 46-45 win over Oconee County in boys’ play Friday night in Toccoa.

The game was a back-and-forth affair with neither team leading by more than a few points throughout. Oconee County built a four-point lead before the Indians came back.

Colwell, Takias Nails and Nigel Green all had 10 points to lead Stephens County. Carter Huckaby led the Warriors with 10 points.

With the win, the Indian boys move to 12-6 overall and 2-1 in region play. Oconee County drops to 12-8 overall and 1-3 in the region.

In the girls’ game, Stephens County had a double figure lead only to see Oconee County come back. However, late free throws and key stops propelled the Lady Indians to a 51-47 win over the Lady Warriors.

Mary Alice Knight, Savannah Broska, and Renajah Verdell all had nine points to lead the Lady Indians. Julia Peroni led Oconee County with 21 points.

This marked the first region win for the Lady Indians, who are now 5-12 overall. Oconee drops to 11-9 overall and 0-4 in the region.

Stephens County returns to the Currahee Arena on Tuesday to host North Oconee in another region game. Tip-off for the girls’ game Tuesday is at 6 p.m. with the boys’ game to follow. Airtime on WNEG is set for 5:45 p.m.
