Indians-State Playoffs Moved To Friday

The Stephens County Indians Baseball team will now begin state playoff play on Friday. Thursday’s scheduled games with Blessed Trinity in Roswell have been postponed a day due to expected wet weather on Thursday.

The Indians are the #4 seed from Region-8 and will open the AAAA playoffs at the #1 seed from Region-7 Titans.

The Titans are not only the #1 seed from their region, but also the #1 ranked team in class AAAA in virtually every poll, and the #1 ranked team overall in the state by Max Preps. The Titans are also ranked 17th nationally by Max Preps.

Despite facing a formidable foe, Stephens County Indians Head Coach Greg McCall feels his team can compete. “They (Blessed Trinity) are solid. They are 28-2. They have all of the accolades out there, but last year we went into the playoffs against #1 seeds. We are going to go play baseball and compete, and we expect to win the series.”

Last year Stephens County defeated two #1 seeds on the road before falling in the Elite Eight. Each round of the playoffs is the best two out of three. Friday’s doubleheader in Roswell will begin at 4 P.M., and a game 3 will be on Friday, if necessary.

Stephens County enters the playoffs with an overall record of 21-9 and McCall says the season had some ups and downs. “I was real pleased with the kids this year. Anytime you can win 21 games you are doing well. We had some streaks that were beneficial to us, and we had some learning experiences that were also beneficial.”

Stephens County will have the experience of facing tough competition with five of the six teams in Region-8 ranked in the state top 10 at times during the season. “I would say if it is not the toughest, it is one of the toughest regions in the state.” says McCall.

McCall knows that the road ahead will be tough, but feels his team has what it takes “I think we can hit with anybody, we have solid defense, our pitchers are going to throw strikes. We are going up with the thoughts that we can win the series.”

WNEG will broadcast the state playoff games at Blessed Trinity.Airtime for the doubleheader from Roswell will be 3:45 P.M. Friday with first pitch at 4 P.M. on 93.1 FM , AM-630 WNEG and at wnegradio.com.
