Indians Split With Lions, Warriors

Stephens County splits a Saturday night basketball doubleheader with rival Franklin County.

At the Currahee Arena on Saturday night, the Indian boys picked up a 76-53 win over the Lions, but the Lady Indians fell to Franklin County, 67-23.

In the boys’ game, Ty Nails and DeUndre Singleton each had 25 points as the Indians, who led by two at the half, outscored the Lions 42-21 in the second half. Montavis Thornton added 11 for Stephens County.

Titus Brown had 21 points, including five three-pointers, for Franklin County, while Micah Roebuck scored 14 points.

In the girls’ game, the unbeaten Franklin County Lady Lions outscored Stephens County 26-6 in the first quarter on the way to their 16th straight win.

Mya Jones led Franklin County with 23 points and Asia Jones added 14. Ranajah Verdell and Tynajiah Eades each scored six points for Stephens County.

Saturday night marked the second straight night of basketball action for Stephens County.

Friday night, Stephens County hosted Oconee County in region play.

In the girls’ game Friday, the Lady Indians picked up their first region win, beating Oconee County, 54-49. Keke Latner had 16 points Friday to lead three Lady Indians in double figures, while Tykia Thompson added 14 and Anaiah Wilson scored 12.

In the boys’ game Friday, Stephens County could not hold a seven-point lead in the final quarter and lost to Oconee County, 70-64.

DeUndre Singleton had 21 points for the Indians on Friday, while Montavis Thornton had 14 points, Ty Nails scored 12 and Chaz Bridges added 11.

For the season, the Indian boys are 12-5 overall and 0-2 in the region. The Lady Indians are 8-8 overall and 1-1 in the region.

Stephens County is back in action Tuesday night at Madison County. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. for the girls’ game with the boys’ game to follow. Air time on WNEG and wnegradio.com is set for 5:45 p.m.
