Indians Season Ends in Overtime

The Stephens County Indians boys basketball season ends in overtime in Alpharetta.

Zevian Capers scored six of his team high 16 points in the overtime period to lead Denmark to a 63-58 win over Stephens County in the 2nd round of the AAAA State playoffs Thursday night.

The Sweet Sixteen game was close throughout. The Indians led 11-9 after one quarter, but the game was tied at halftime, at the end of the 3rd quarter, and at the end of regulation. Stephens County’s largest lead was 7 in the 1st half, and Denmark’s largest lead was the final score.

Ty Nails ended his outstanding high school career with 25 points to lead the Indians. Nails leaves Stephens County as the school’s top scorer finishing just shy of 1700 points in his 4 years.

Nigel Green scored 14 points, and Takias Nails added 13 for the Indians. Stephens County’s season ends with an overall record of 17-11 and Region-8 runner up.

Denmark’s Sutton Smith also had 16 points for the Great Danes who advance to face Woodward Academy in the final eight.

This was the final game for Stephens County seniors Ty Nails, Takias Nails, and Jossiah Montgomery.

In other games involving area teams and teams of interest, Franklin County continues their Cinderella run and moves to the final 8 in AAA with a 62-57 win over Beach, Hart County will join them as the Bulldogs knocked off North Murray 56-54, Elbert County advances in AA with a 59-36 win over Rockmart, and Region-8 champion St. Pius advanced with a 63-50 win over Marist and will now face Americus-Sumter who knocked off two-time defending AAAA state champion Upson Lee.
