Indians Open Region Play with a Rout

The undefeated Stephens County Indians opened region-8 AAA play with an impressive 38-7 victory over Monroe Area Friday night at The Reservation.

Stephens County Head Coach Wesley Tankersley was happy to get off to a great start in the region.

The Indians got their first score on an Aidan Butts 8-yard run for a 7-0 lead. Two Javin Gordon touchdown runs extended the score in the 2nd quarter. Gordon had TD runs of 2 and 69 yards and the Indians took a 21-0 lead into halftime.

Monroe Area’s first score came quickly in the 2nd half recovering an onside kick to start the 2nd half and Darian Manuel took it 26 yards to cut the lead to 21-7.

The Indians grabbed the momentum back after a long Gordon run set-up a beautiful 33-yard touchdown pass from Tripp Underwood to Jasec Smith. The Indians added to the lead on their next possession culminating with a 26-yard field goal by Luke Waters. Waters was also perfect on the night with extra points.

Brock Tankersley capped off the Indians scoring with a touchdown run in the 4th quarter.

The Indian defense was outstanding, limiting the Purple Hurricanes to just 97 yards of total offense while the Indians rolled up 491 yards.

Tankersley was proud of his team but knows they can improve.

Stephens County moves to 1-0 in region play and 6-0 overall. Monroe Area falls to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the region.
