Indians-Leopards Split Basketball Doubleheader

Ranajah Verdell scored 22 points and Breanna Taylor added 16, including three 3-pointers, to lead the Stephens County Lady Indians Basketball team to a 59-56 victory over Banks County in Homer Saturday evening.

The Lady Indians led a back and forth 1st half 31-27 at halftime. The Lady Indians extended the lead to as much as 10 in the 2nd half, but Banks County battled back to take the lead in the 4th quarter.

The Lady Leopards lead was short-lived as Stephens County used tough defense and clutch free throws down the stretch to grab the victory.

Banks County Freshman Jacy Ayers scored 21 points to lead the Lady Leopards.

The Lady Indians improve to 2-0 on the season. Banks County falls to 0-2.

In the Stephens County boys season opener and the first game for new head coach Jeremy Hughes, Banks County’s Carl Cleveland scored 34 points to lead the Class AA 9th ranked Leopards to a 72-63 win over the Indians.

Kenny Colwell led Stephens County with 5 3-pointers and 15 points. Tyrese Mackie added 12 points, and DJ Jones scored 10 to also reach double figures for the Indians.

Stephens County is now 0-1. Banks County improves to 2-0.
