Indians Get Huge Senior Night Win Over Monroe Area

Led by Cam Lacy’s 17 points, the Stephens County Indians knocked off, one of the top-ranked teams in the state and previously undefeated in region 8-AAA, Monroe Area Purple Hurricanes 64-53 Tuesday night at Currahee Arena.

Monroe jumped out to a 15-9 lead after the first quarter, but the Indians took over the game after that. The game was tight for the first half with the Indians leading the ‘Canes by one point, 26-25 at the half. Cam Lacy and Nuri Winters came on strong in the second half to lead the Indians to the win. Vonte Newell led the ‘Canes with 13 points and Diondre Newell had 10 points.

With the win, the Indians raised their region record to 5-4 and 12-10 overall while Monroe Area suffered their first region loss to fall to 8-1 and now 20-4 overall.

The Lady Hurricanes defeated the Stephens County Lady Indians 49-39 in the first game of the evening.

Makiya Knox led the Lady Indians with 13 points, followed by Fayeth Ivester with 8 points.

The Lady Hurricanes were led by Jakiya Butts, who scored 15 points, while Jaliya Millsap chipped in with 12.

Stephens County is now 3-20 on the season with a region record of 1-8. Monroe Area’s girls are now 11-13 overall and 4-5 in the region.

The final game of the regular season finds the Indians and Lady Indians on the road at Hebron Christian on Friday. The Lady Lions are 24-0 on the season and are the number one team in the state of Georgia. The Indian Boys will be vying to tie for 2nd in the region and secure at least a 3-seed in the region tournament beginning Monday.

Game time Friday night in Dacula is set for 6 P.M. with airtime on WNEG scheduled for 5:45 PM.
