Indians finish non-regional play 5-0 on Tankersley’s 100th career win

The Stephens County Indians wrapped up the non-region schedule with a perfect 5-0 record after downing White County 56-26 Friday night in Cleveland.

The win was coach Wesley Tankersley’s career 100th win.

The Indians trailed in the first half by six points, but took a 21-20 lead to the half. The Indians then scored the next 28 points in an explosive 3rd quarter to widen the lead to 49-20.

Stephens County quarterback Tripp Underwood threw three touchdown passes in the game with a pair of 56 yard touchdown passes to Jasec Smith and Brock Tankersley, and an 82-yard strike to Javin Gordon.

Smith and Tankersley also had interceptions for touchdowns, and Gordon had a 65-yard punt return for a touchdown and added two TD runs of 5 and 2 yards for a total of four touchdowns on the night.

The Indians lost three fumbles in the first half leading to two White County touchdowns and a Warrior field goal. 

Tankersley said there were good adjustments at the half by the players and coaches.

White County falls to 2-2 on the season.

Stephens County was the only team from Region-8 AAA to get a win on Friday night and will take their 5-0 record into next week’s open date. 

The Indians will return home on September 29th when they open region play against Monroe Area.
