Indians Finish 2nd in Region-Will Host State Playoff Series

The Stephens County Indians baseball team was 1-5 in Region-8 AAAA play with only 6 Region games remaining…they finished the regular season 7-5.

The Indians followed up a sweep of Oconee County with a completion of a sweep of Madison County on Wednesday taking the doubleheader 7-2 and 8-2 to finish 2nd in the Region.

It was senior night at the Reservation and seven seniors were honored pre-game: Carson Brock, Aaron Chappelear, Ben Hobbs, Cayden Maxwell, Dawson Sorrells, Davis Swenson, and Gabe White.

In game one of the doubleheader, the Indians trailed 1-0 after the top of the 1st, but bounced back with a run in the bottom of the inning when Sorrells walked and scored on a Swenson single. The Indians scored 3 more runs in the 3rd inning. Isaiah Martin walked with the bases loaded to score Eli Wenger, and Maxwell scored on Ridge Adams RBI sacrifice fly that also scored Swenson on a throwing error.

In the 4th inning, Brock and Jordan Page had back to back singles and scored on Wenger’s 3-run home run. It was Wenger’s 3rd homer of the season and 2nd in two nights.

Madison County added a run in the 6th inning, but that was all they could muster against  White who pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing just 2 runs on 5 hits and striking out 9. White improves to 5-4 on the season. Josh Henshaw pitched the final inning and a third of scoreless ball.

In game two, the Indians jumped out early scoring 6 runs in the first 3 innings to roll to the 8-2 win. The Indians got on the board in the 2nd inning when Swenson singled and scored on a Hobbs RBI single. In the 3rd inning, Sorrells singled and later scored on Wenger’s sac fly, Maxwell and Swenson walked and scored on wild pitches, Hobbs doubled, Chappelear was hit by a pitch and Cole Snyder walked. Hobbs and Chappelear scored on Carson Brock’s two-RBI single to make the score 6-0. Madison County scored one each in the 5th and 6th innings, but the Indians answered when White singled and scored on a Brock single in the 5th, and Pierce Childs walked and scored on a wild pitch in the 6th.

Sorrells moved to 4-3 on the season picking up the complete game win allowing just 2 runs on 5 hits and striking out 10.

Madison County’s season ends with a record of 10-14 and 3-9 in the Region.

Stephens County finishes the regular season 17-11-1 and 7-5 in Region-8 play. The Indians will host LaGrange in the 1st round of the AAAA state playoffs. The best of 3 series will begin with a doubleheader on Wednesday.
