Indians fall to Dragons in contests

Stephens County boys and girls both lost region games at Jefferson in varsity basketball Monday night.

In the girls’ game, Jefferson’s pressure defense forced a lot of Lady Indian turnovers.  After trailing by just 5 points at the end of the first period, Jefferson outscored Stephens County, 20 to 5, in the second period, and went on to an easy 70 to 40 victory.  Tykia Thompson got into foul trouble and only scored 2 points in the first three periods, but scored 11 in the final period to finish with 13 to lead the Lady Indians.  Stephens County falls to 10 & 11 overall and 2 & 4 in the region.  Jefferson improves to 14 & 6 over and 3 & 3 in Region 8-AAAA.

In the boys’ game, Stephens County had an early lead, but Jefferson’s Jasper Gibson scored 31 points in the first half to lead the Dragons to a 23-point advantage at halftime, 50 to 27.  But Stephens County came storming back in the third period scoring 29 points while holding Jefferson to just 8 points to cut the lead to 2 at the end of the third.  The Indians tied the score with 3 minutes to go and had a couple of leads late, but could not hold off the Dragons in losing 75 to 72.  De’Undra Singleton led the Indians with 26 points.  Ty Nails added 14 points.  Jefferson’s Jasper Gibson finished with 41 points.  The Indian boys are now 14-7 overall, 2 and 4 in the region. Jefferson improves to 14 & 7 overall, 5 & 1 in the region.

In girls J-V action, Jefferson defeated Stephens County, 42 to 32.
