Indians Fall on Senior Night

Stephens County football drops a heartbreaker on Senior Night.

The Indians had the ball down three points late, but could not convert a fourth down deep in Jefferson territory and the Dragons held on to beat Stephens County, 27-24.

Indians’ Head Coach Frank Barden says that Stephens County gave it all they had.

“All you can do is give great effort,” said Barden. “You are not guaranteed anything on the scoreboard. Our kids played hard. They came up short at the end, but they played hard and it was a great football game.”

After a Jefferson field goal opened the scoring, the Indians jumped to a 7-3 lead on a five-yard touchdown run by Hassan Brown late in the first quarter.

Jefferson scored the next two touchdowns on a 9-yard run by Bryce Moore and a 31-yard touchdown pass to make it 17-7 halfway through the second quarter.

The Indians cut it to 17-10 at halftime thanks to a Luke Pearson 28-yard field goal.

A Jefferson field goal extended the Dragon lead to 20-10, the Indians cut it back to three points on a touchdown run from Jackson Bell.

After a Colby Wood touchdown run pushed the Jefferson lead back to 10, Jackson Bell scored on a 17-yard run to make it 27-24, but the Indians could get no closer.

Bell had two touchdown runs for Stephens County and Brown went over 100 yards rushing again on the night for the Indians.

Stephens County falls to 1-3 in the region and 4-5 overall with the loss. Jefferson advances to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in region play.

The Indians wrap up the regular season next week at North Oconee.
