Indians Fall in Regular Season Finale

It was a wild end to the regular season on Friday night at the Reservation.

The Stephens County Indians trailed St. Pius by as many as 9 runs and battled back to within 2, but that would be as close as they would get falling 14-12.

Stephens County led 2-0 after the first inning, but trailed 3-2 after the 2nd. St. Pius added four more runs in the top of third inning and scored two more in the top of the 4th to lead 9-2. The Indians scored three in the bottom of the 4th to cut the St. Pius lead to four, but the Golden Lions came back with five more runs in the top of the 5th inning and led 14-5.

It was at that point that the Indians made it a game. Stephens County scored three times in the bottom of the 5th inning and four more in the bottom of the 6th to cut the lead to 14-12, but St. Pius pitcher Will David, who started the game at catcher, came on to get the final five outs and secure the St. Pius win.

The Indians were aided by three St. Pius errors, and a combination of wild pitches and passed balls that helped the comeback. Stephens County had 7 RBI’s in the game with Zach Boyd leading the way with three hits and 4 RBI’s, Chaz Bridges added two RBI’s and Dawson Sorrells had one. Sorrells also had three hits in the game and reached base all five times. Kole Rogers and Griff Pruitt added two hits each.
The Indians had a total of 12 hits in the game.

St. Pius had 19 hits in the game led by Mike Spear who went 4 for 5 with 5 RBI’s

St. Pius starting pitcher Adam Sitzman got the win going just over three innings. Indians starter Gabe White got the loss allowing 3 runs on 5 hits in two innings with a strikeout and is now 4-2 on the season.

St. Pius season ends at 17-13 overall and 6-9 in the Region. Stephens County finishes the regular season at 21-9 and 7-8 in the Region.

The Indians will now prepare for the AAAA State Playoffs on Thursday as the Region-8 4th seeded team when they travel to top ranked Blessed Trinity in Atlanta for a doubleheader. Time to be announced.

Other first round match-ups involving Region 8 teams include Region-8 champion Jefferson hosting Chestatee, 2nd seed North Oconee hosting West Hall, and 3rd seed Madison County at Marist.
