Indians Fall in OT at Franklin County

Mylan Roebuck and Carson Coulter made key free throws in the overtime period to lead Franklin County to a 59-55 win over Stephens County Friday night at the Lions Den in Carnesville.

Stephens County battled back from a six-point deficit late in regulation and tied the score on Jet Black’s basket with just over 30 seconds to play. After a defensive stop, the Indians had the ball with a chance to win but Javin Gordon was called for a charge on his drive to the basket with just under a second to play to force the overtime period.

The Lions outscored the Indians 7-3 in the four-minute overtime period.

Roebuck had 22 points to lead the Lions in scoring. DJ Appleby added 19 points for Franklin County now 3-3 in region-8 play and 11-9 overall.

Gordon was the only Stephens County player in double figures with 17 points.

It was the 5th straight loss for the Indians now 1-5 in the region and 7-12 overall.

In the girls’ game, Franklin County’s Emiyah Strange made five 3-pointers and scored 25 points to lead the Lady Lions to a 63-49 win over Stephens County.

The Lady Indians led 10-8 after the 1st quarter but Franklin County took a 6-point lead into halftime and extended the lead to 13 after three quarters.

Takiaha Winkfield added 15-points for the Lady Lions now 3-3 in the region and 12-9 overall.

Despite being saddled by foul trouble, A’Niya Mayweather was outstanding for the Lady Indians scoring 23 points. Lanesia Verdell added 10 points for Stephens County now 1-5 in the region and 3-17 overall.

Stephens County returns to region play on Tuesday when they host Oconee County at Currahee Arena with airtime for the girls’ game at 5:45 P.M. on WNEG.
