Indians Fall in Consolation Game-Face Highly Ranked Sandy Creek in State

The Monroe Area Purple Hurricanes broke open a tight, defense-minded ball game in the fourth quarter Friday night and defeated the Stephens County Indians 46-26.

Stephens County trailed only by two points at the half 15-13, and by seven at the end of the third period, but Monroe went on a scoring spree in the final stanza, outscoring the Indians 20-5 for the final tally.

Monroe Area was led in scoring by Jaiven Todd who dropped in 16 points. Vonte Newell chipped in with 10. The Indians were led by Javin Gordon who scored 7 points.

The game determined the third and fourth seeds from Region 8-AAA in this week’s State Tournament. Stephens County will be on the road Wednesday at Sandy Creek for the first round of the state tournament. Game time will be 6 P.M. with airtime on WNEG at 5:45 P.M.

Representing region-8 in the boys AAA state tournament will be #1 seed Hart County, who defeated Hebron Christian in the region championship game, hosting Carver of Atlanta, the #2 seed Lions hosting Cedar Grove, and Monroe Area will travel to Douglass.
