Indians Fall at Rabun Co. in Football

Rabun County scored 28 unanswered second half points to come from behind and beat Stephens County, 41-14, in non-region football play in Tiger Friday night.

The Indians took a 14-13 lead early in the third quarter, but Rabun County got two third quarter touchdowns and then added 16 more fourth quarter points on their way to victory.

“They played really hard,” said Indians’ Head Coach Wesley Tankersley. “I’d have liked to finished better because the game was closer than the score indicated. We’re proud of the effort they gave and we need to quit making some of the mental mistakes we made tonight.”

Late in the first quarter, Stephens County struck first on a three-yard touchdown run by Hudson Spurlock.

However, the second quarter belonged to Rabun County as the Wildcats got two field goals from Tito Diaz, from 32 and 40 yards, along with a five-yard touchdown pass from Gunnar Stockton to Sam Adams to take a 13-7 lead at halftime.

Stephens County retook the lead early in the third quarter on a 16-yard touchdown run by Kenny Colwell.

However, Austin Jones returned a punt 65 yards for a score to give Rabun County a lead they would not relinquish. The Wildcats also got two touchdown runs in the second half from Brison Beck, a touchdown run from Brody Jarrard, and a safety to account for the rest of their second half scoring.

With the loss, the Indians drop to 2-2 on the season. The win, meanwhile, moves the Wildcats to 2-1.

Stephens County returns home on Friday night to host Habersham Central in the battle for Currahee Mountain. Kick-off on Friday night is 7:30 p.m. with air time on WNEG set for 5:30 p.m. with the Indian Tailgate Show.
