Indians End Football Season with Loss to St. Pius

The season comes to a close for the Stephens County Indian football team.

Friday night, the Indians lost to St. Pius at home on Senior Night, 42-21.

Stephens County Head Coach Wesley Tankersley said it is a tough way to end the season.

“The kids played hard tonight,” said Tankersley. “Offensively, we played pretty well. Defensively, we’ve just got to get better. We’ve got a lot of youth on that side of the ball. We have to get bigger and stronger.”

The first quarter started out strong for Stephens County as the Indians jumped out to a 14-7 lead on the strength of a Hudson Spurlock 12-yard touchdown run and a Gamarian Carter five-yard touchdown catch from Kenny Colwell.

However, St. Pius scored 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to send the Golden Lions into the locker room with a 28-14 lead.

St. Pius extended its lead to 35-14 before the Indians added one last touchdown on a four-yard run by MJ Jones to cut it to 35-21.

The Golden Lions then added an insurance touchdown in the fourth quarter for the final score.

With the win, St. Pius finishes third in Region 8-AAAA with a 5-5 overall record and a region record of 2-2. Stephens County ends the season 1-9 overall and 0-4 in Region 8-AAAA.

St. Pius joins region champion Oconee County, North Oconee, and Madison County as the four teams representing Region 8 in the AAAA state playoffs that begin this coming Friday night.
