Indians Down Lions in Region Opener

The Stephens County Indians won for the third straight time, and more importantly, opened region-8 AAA play with a big win at home in Currahee Areana on Wednesday night.

The games on Wednesday were moved from Tuesday when schools were closed due hazardous weather.

In the very tight boy’s contest, the Stephens County Indians escaped with a 60-56 win over the Franklin County boys.

Stephens County outscored the Lions 35-28 in the second half to pull away in the final minutes.

Javin Gordon dropped in 18 points to lead the Indians and Semaj Walker added 12.

The Lions were led by Carson Coulter with 15 points and Bentley Huff chipped in with 14 points-all in the second half.
The Indians are now 7-7 overall and 1-0 in the region. Franklin County falls to 8-7 and 0-1
in the region.

 

Led by Tkiaha Winkfield’s 24 points, the Franklin County Lady Lions defeated the Stephens County Lady Indians 50-39.

Lanesia Verdell was the lone Lady Indian in double figures with 11 points.

Franklin County’s girls are now 10-6 on the season and 1-0 in region play.

The Lady Indians are now 2-13 and 0-1 in region play.

Franklin County will host Monroe Area Friday night.

The Indians and Lady Indians will be on the road Friday night at Oconee County for a 7 P.M. game. Broadcast time on WNEG Radio will be 6:45 P.M.
