Indians Complete Sweep at Monroe-Playoff Bound

It took until the final day of the season, but the Stephens County Indians combined a strong offense with great pitching and fielding when needed and swept a doubleheader at Monroe Area High School on Thursday night.

The Indians won both games in dominating fashion winning the first game 9-3 and game 2 11-1 in six innings.

The two wins give the Indians a 5-10 record in Region-8 AAA play equaling the record of the Purple Hurricanes and advancing to the State AAA playoffs as the region’s #4 seed by virtue of the head to head tiebreaker, taking the series 2 games to 1.

In game one, Ayden Garmon pitched six strong innings allowing only one unearned run, allowing just 3 hits and striking out six to lead the Indians to the 9-3 win.

The Indians got 3 RBI’s from Craig Thurmond, and Carson Worley, Garrett Burgess, Ben Stowe, and Dylan White each provided a RBI. Burgess, Stowe, Thurmond, and Colby Fowler had two hits each to lead the 13-hit Indian attack.

In game two, Stowe got things started with a two-run home run in the top of the 1st inning and Nick Randall pitched 5 strong innings giving up one unearned run on two hits and striking out seven to lead the Indians to the 11-1 win in six innings.

The Indians led 3-1 heading into the 5th inning, but sent 13 hitters to the plate and scored 7 runs to break the game open. The Indians only had 3 hits in the inning, but were aided by 3 Purple Hurricane errors and 5 walks.

Stowe flashed a great glove at 3rd base and led the Indians with 3 RBI’s. Cruz Mullinix had 2 RBI’s, and Worley and Patrick Murray both added a RBI. Mullinix, Stowe, and Seth McCollum had two hits each for the Indians.

Stephens County is now 13-15 overall and will travel to Rockmart out of Region-6 next Friday in the best 2 of 3 series. Rockmart is the #1 seed out of Region-6 and sports a record of 19-6 with a final regular season game today vs. Adairsville.
