Indians Beat Madison Co. on Senior Night in Football

Hudson Spurlock’s five-touchdown night leads Stephens County to a crucial region win on Senior Night at the Reservation.

The Indians jumped out early on the way to a 42-14 win over Madison County on Friday night in Toccoa in Region 8-AAAA football play.

“We are very happy for the seniors,” said Stephens County Head Coach Wesley Tankersley. “They have worked extremely hard all year. I know things haven’t gone our way the last couple of weeks, but we’ve gotten better throughout the year.”

The Indians used strong defense and special teams in the first quarter to build an early lead. A fourth down stop, blocked punt, and fumble recovery all led to Indian touchdowns, as Hudson Spurlock scored on runs of 2 and 14 yards and Kamon Taylor scored on a 4-yard touchdown run to give Stephens County a 21-7 edge after one quarter.

In the second quarter, each team scored once. Madison County scored on a 17-yard pass from Colby Smith to Traveon Latimore. Then, Stephens County answered on a 5-yard touchdown run by Spurlock to take a 28-7 lead into halftime.

Stephens County extended the lead to 35-7 on an 80-yard kickoff return by Spurlock to open the third quarter, and Spurlock scored his fifth touchdown on a 4-yard touchdown run later in the third to make it 42-7 in favor of Stephens County.

Under a running clock in the fourth quarter, Madison County scored on a 69-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Latimore to cut the Indians’ lead to 42-14, which was the final score of the night for either team.

With the win, Stephens County moves to 5-4 overall and 1-2 in region play. Madison County drops to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in the region.

Stephens County heads out on the road Friday night to face St. Pius in Atlanta to wrap up the regular season, while Madison County will take on Oconee County.
