Indians Basketball Season Ends in Region Tournament

The Stephens County Indians basketball season came to an end Tuesday night falling to Monroe Area in the first round of the Region-8 AAA tournament 62-56 in Watkinsville.

The Indians struggled scoring in the first half and trailed 27-19 at the half.

Monroe Area would extend the lead to as much as 14 in the 2nd half and led by 11 at the end of the 3rd quarter. The Indians roared back to pull to within two with just over 5 minutes to go in the game but that would be as close as the would get.

Stephens County was led in scoring by the two seniors: Kairion “Moochie” Morrison led the Indians with 16 points and Tyrece Mackie added 9 in their final game as Indians. AJ Russell also added 9 points in the loss.

The Indians had trouble all night stopping the Purple Hurricanes center Damareon Whitner. Whitner had 27 points to lead all scorers.

Monroe Area improved to 10-16 on the season and will now face Hart County in the tournament semi-final on Thursday. Monroe Area also claimed a spot in next week’s AAA State Tournament. Franklin County will face Oconee County in the other semi-final on Thursday.

Stephens County ends the season with an overall record of 6-20.
