Indian Football Drops Region Opener

The Stephens County Indian football team will return home this week to try and break their six-game losing streak.

Friday night, Oconee County jumped out early and never looked back on the way to a 41-14 win over the Indians in Watkinsville.

Stephens County Head Coach Wesley Tankersley said the Indians just need to keep working.

“They’re just bigger, faster and stronger than we are,” said Tankersley. “Coach Noland is doing a great job with what they’re doing down here. We have to get to that point, off-season wise. We have to get bigger, faster and stronger. That’s the bottom line. The kids played hard and did some good things. We just made some mistakes and were a little physically outmatched.”

Oconee County scored first late in the first quarter when Max Johnson threw a four-yard touchdown pass to Ben Noland.

Two more touchdown passes from Johnson to Noland of 53 and 7 yards in the second quarter made it 21-0 in favor of the Warriors at halftime.

In the third quarter, Oconee County’s Jimmy Boswell scored on touchdown runs of five and 11 yards and Rayle Luna scored on a five-yard touchdown run to make it 41-0.

Stephens County got on the board in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run from Hudson Spurlock and a five-yard touchdown run from Cam’ron Lacy.

With the loss, the Indians drop to 1-6 on the season and 0-1 in Region 8-AAAA. Oconee County moves to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the region.

Stephens County returns home on Friday to take on North Oconee in another region game. Kick-off is 7:30 p.m. Friday with coverage starting at 5:30 p.m. with the Indian Tailgate Show on wnegradio.com and WNEG.
