Hugh Mitchell Rampy

Hugh Mitchell Rampy, age 93, of Sweetwater TN, passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at his home.

Born on January 6, 1928 in Stephens County GA, he was the son of the late Freeman Mitchell and Odessel Nimmons Rampy, and lived in Toccoa GA until 1968 when he moved to Sweetwater TN.  He was a Veteran, having served in the United States Navy for 22 months beginning in January, 1946.   After going through boot camp in San Diego CA, he served as Seaman 1st Class in Kanao Bay, HI, and was stationed on aircraft carrier Tarawa while in Pearl Harbor, HI and San Francisco.

Hugh worked 42 years beginning with Southern Railway in 1948 and retiring from Norfolk-Southern in 1990.  For 20 years from 1948-68 he was with a signal gang working as Foreman most of that time. During this time, walking the entire length of Southern track from Atlanta GA to Alexandria VA.  Moving to Sweetwater, Tennessee in 1968, he continued to work as a Signal Maintainer until retirement in 1990.  After retirement, he took several vacation trips so he could claim that he had visited all 50 states and continued to keep cows on his property until age 90.

Family members include daughters and son-in-law, June Ponder of Seneca, SC, Kay Rampy of Naperville, IL, Lynn and Garry Menendez of Knoxville, TN; grand-daughters, Andrea and Elizabeth Menendez of Knoxville, TN; brother and sister-in-law Curtis Ray and Jeane Rampy of Liberty, SC; sisters and brother-in-law, Minnie Lou and Marvin Harrison of Toccoa, GA and Jean Wiggins of Oxford, GA; brother-in-law Dan Merck of Toccoa, GA; and sister-in-law Betty Graham Addington of Easley, SC.

He was preceded in death by his wife Jane Addington Rampy; brother Rothell Rampy; sisters and brother-in-law, Sue Ella and Roscoe “Cokey” Storey and Sara Ruth Merck; brothers-in-law Ferd Moore, Stewart “Jockey” Wiggins, and Phil Addington.

The family will receive friends at Kyker Funeral Home, Sweetwater, TN, Friday, July 16, 5:00 pm -7:00 pm.

Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday, July 18, 2021 from the Chapel of Whitlock Mortuary, Toccoa, GA with his nephew, the Rev Ken Forrester officiating.

The family will receive friends at Whitlock Mortuary from 2 pm until the service on Sunday, July 18, 2021.

Burial will follow at Stephens Memorial Gardens with Military Honors provided by the United States Navy.

The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: son-in-law Garry Menendez, and nephews Mike Harrison, Morris Harrison, Mark Harrison, Jeff Wiggins, and Shane Rampy.
