HCHS Student-Athlete critically injured in fatal accident Monday

Law enforcement officers have confirmed that a Habersham Central High School student-athlete was one of the two drivers involved in a fatal accident Monday night near Stephens County.

Hadden Carswell was critically injured in the accident. The other driver, has been identified as 65-year-old, Toccoa resident Hayward Cochran Jr., who died at the scene.

The accident happened on Talmadge Drive near the Stephens County line.

Habersham County E-911 dispatched emergency personnel to the scene at 6:06 p.m. on Feb. 24.

Officials say both drivers were trapped inside their vehicles when first responders arrived.

According to Habersham County law enforcement, the two drivers were the only ones involved in the crash.

Carswell was transported by Habersham EMS to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville where he underwent emergency surgery.

The Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is investigating the cause of the fatal crash.
