Hart County’s Dam Dog Walk postponed until Sept. 11

Just a reminder that the Hart County Humane Society has pushed back their annual Dam Dog Walk this year to September.

Normally held in April at the Big Oaks Recreation Center,  it was to have taken place on Saturday May 15 this year.

However Humane Society President Donna Madkiff tells WNEG’s sister station WLHR that the Corps of Engineers had asked them for a plan and layout for how they would adhere to the CDC’s COVID safety guidelines.

She said with so many people expected to attend, along with their dogs, keeping people socially distanced from each other would be difficult, if not impossible.

Madkiff said the Fundraising Committee, after some discussion, decided to wait until September 11 to hold the Dam Dog Walk in the hopes that some of the CDC COVID restrictions will have been eased enough to hold the event.

This will be the Humane Society’s 13th annual Dam Dog Walk, which is a major fundraiser for them.

According to Madkiff, the event is an opportunity to help raise money so they can help sick and injured animals.

She said money raised from adoptions is not enough to cover the extra veterinary care sick animals that are brought to them might need.

During the Dam Dog Walk, dog owners can walk along the path that leads to the dam and back again, about a 2 mile walk round trip.

In addition to the walk, the Humane Society will be selling t-shirts and other items and other rescue groups are expected to be there with dogs for adoption.

Again, this year’s 13th annual Dam Dog Walk has been post-poned to September 11.
