Gumlog Man Denied Bond in Poplar Springs Murder

Whitworth faces multiple charges, including murder in the death of a Poplar Springs man

A Franklin County Judge has denied bond for a Gumlog man accused in the shooting death of his neighbor on Poplar Springs Road earlier this month.

Franklin County Magistrate Judge Cody Grizzle denied bond for 29-year old William “Billy” Lamar Whitworth of Trout Drive.

Franklin County Sheriff Steve Thomas tells WNEG News it happened Friday, April 12.

He said EMS and Sheriff’s deputies were called to the home of Michael John Ehlers and found a white male in his 50’s who had been shot.

The victim was later identified as Ehlers.

Ehlers was airlifted to Greenville Hospital where he underwent surgery, but he died the next day from a single gunshot wound.

Sheriff’s investigators, along with agents from the Athens office of the GBI continued to conduct interviews and the following Tuesday arrested Whitworth.

Whitworth is charged Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Possession Of A Firearm By a Convicted Felon.  He is being held in the Franklin County Detention Center.
